A guardian angel
tries to protect a young girl and loses his divinity in the process. |

|
The dramatic
modern gothic tale, presented the way it was meant to be read! Thomas is
a guardian angel watching over the tumultuous life of Robin, a vulnerable
young girl who grows up in the morally bankrupt surroundings of middle-class
suburbia. Robin runs away to the dangerous streets of Manhattan in the
early 80s--as Thomas battles the laws of angelic guardianship in an effort
to save her from certain death. A story that blends intense drama, tender
romance, nostaligc fads and astonishing violence, HALO is a full color
comic novel that truly brings the medium to life.

From Library
Journal
In this creative partnering
between the old and the new, Martinet (The Art of Mingling) writes contemporary
love stories using the settings and illustrations from DC's romance comics
from the 1940s through the 1970s. In Martinet's world, a 1950s story called
"Loving the Wrong Man," originally involving an affair with a married man,
might be rewritten as "Loving a Gay Man," for example. Others include "My
Heart Said Yes, but My Therapist Said No!" and "Too Dumb for Love!" The
collection is uneven, as some of the retellings work contemporary social
mores into their fabric better than others. Still, this is a book with
plenty of appeal for older teens and adults. A good purchase for libraries
with strong humor collections.

Rob Grafton
and Louise Bright are in love and engaged to be married. When they unexpectedly
find themselves unemployed, marriage plans are derailed as they suddenly
find themselves having to rethink the direction of their lives. While Louise
turns to school, Rob maintains a staunch desire to regain his old job,
but when the plant itself is closed down and hope is lost, Rob's depression
not only keeps him from finding another job, but ends up repelling Louise,
as well. |
Set in contemporary
England, Breakfast After Noon is a unique comic-book treat, choosing to
focus on the twists and turns of real life rather than convoluted plots
or the smoke-and-mirrors of the fantastic. With a deft skill at bringing
characters to life with just a few, well-placed lines, Andi Watson has
established himself as one of alternative comics' top creators. His finest
work to date, Breakfast After Noon has a universal appeal for anyone who
has ever been in love or found themselves in a position where they no longer
have any idea where they are headed.
