Fledgling
young genius collected in a fine volume
The first in a series of
collections of Charles Burns' early work has some beautifully drawn and
hilarous stories. Weirdly archetypal subject matter accentuated and subverted
by a dark ironic humor, the work has more to do with the distortions of
pop icons and B-pulp fare that our memory and personality inflict on it
than the source material from which El Borbah draws its inspiration. Highly
recommended. |

Viva El Borbah!
Years before bands such
as Southern Culture on the Skids and Los Straightjackets began to pay homage
to masked Mexican wrestlers, Burns gave us El Borbah. The mask wearing
Private Dick chain smokes, swills beer and gets into fist fights with just
about everyone. Bizarre and beautiful. For those who love B-Grade Sci-Fi,
Mexican wrestlers and Film Noir, this is a must have. |

Graphic storyteller
Charles Burns hits his artistic and narrative stride in the three immaculately
rendered black and white comics stories reprinted in this beautifully bound,
library-quality volume from Fantagraphics. Originally serialized in alternative
weekly newpapers in the '80s, CURSE OF THE MOLE MEN, TEEN PLAGUE, and BLOOD
CLUB portray the suburbs of "Leave It to Beaver", seen through the eyes
of child who can't turn away the violence and seething sexuality behind
the facade. Burns is possibly the finest draftsman to come out the 80s
comics underground, and integrates a Bauhaus design sense with a flair
for Fifties EC horror. Highly recommended for fans of EIGHTBALL, Psychotronic
films, and anyone who grew up in Fifties or early Sixties suburbia. |

1998 Xeric award
winning graphic novel. In the future, people will be physically tagged,
like cattle, using bar code tattoos. That is the premise of this sci-fi
epic, set in a strange new America that has been bled dry by the corporate-government
partnership. As spaceships cruise past, Silly Daddy and his teenage daughter
take an old-fashioned road trip across the country. The year is 2014. Have
a Virtual Reality Happy Meal. Ride a space-age gesso glider. Stay away
from hi-tech cops and psycho teenage chicks. Rediscover the long lost love
of your life, and try to survive that one big death in the family, if you
can. |
